View of Guadalest in Alicante (Region of Valencia)

Guadalest

Alicante-Alacant

Guadalest, sitting on a rock at more than 500 m above sea level, overlooks the reservoir that supplies water to the La Marina Baixa region.

Guadalest is located in the corridor between the Aitana and Xortá mountain ranges. Of Muslim origin, it preserves an old town with historic and artistic buildings. It is worth going up to the San José castle, a Muslim fortress from the 11th century that is accessed by a natural tunnel in the rock. You can see some amazing views from there. Only one tower remains from the 11th century La Alcozaina castle.

Within the town, the parish church of Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción, from the 18th century; the prison from the 12th century that is located in the basement of the Town Hall; and six peculiar museums: Bethlehem and Dollhouses, Torture Instruments, Microminiatures, Ethnological Museum, Microgiant, and the Casa Orduña Municipal Museum, one of the ancestral homes of the municipality.Cultural days take place during the first two weeks of July, including the “day of the tourist”, when all tourists are welcomed and a giant paella is prepared.
