Escalona

Located on a plateau above a steep slope on the right bank of the river Alberche, the origins of Escalona date back more than 2,500 years.

It preserves a magnificent collection of buildings, and is designed on a medieval layout. Its most emblematic monument is the castle, built by Don Álvaro de Luna in the 15th century, which has a perimeter of 420 metres and is divided into two areas: the parade ground to the north and the fortress to the south. It still has the moats, the walls, the towers and the walkways. Other buildings of interest are the convent of La Encarnación, from the 16th century; a wonderful main square with porches around most of its perimeter; a long and beautiful bridge over the river Alberche and a huge variety of popular houses with rows of balconies and porches.
