O Carballiño is a town situated in the far northwest of the province of Ourense, crossed by the course of the river Arenteiro.
An area inhabited since the Neolithic period, it was during the Middle Ages, when the Cistercian monks of Oseira settled here, that the region's economic development began. A genuine symbol of the city, the Temple of Veracruz, the work of the architect Antonio Palacios, is a splendid example of contemporary architecture. A harmonious blend of the Byzantine, pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic styles can be appreciated in the building's design. Other points of interest are the hill-fort remains of San Cibrán de Las, the Galician country house of the Quiroga family and Santa Baia de Banga, a Romanesque gem which houses beautiful multi-coloured mural paintings (16th century).
