Arenas de San Pedro

In addition to its wealth of heritage, Arenas de San Pedro is a site of tourist interest due to its famous Águila Caves, discovered in 1963 and located just six kilometres from the town.

In the centre, the impressive Don Álvaro de Luna castle can be found, with its large keep, along with a Gothic church from the 16th century, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with a magnificent bell tower, and the Infante don Luis de Borbón palace. It is also highly recommendable to visit the San Pedro de Alcántara sanctuary, from the 16th century, declared a Historic and Artistic Monument in 1972. Located three kilometres from Arenas, it was renovated in the 18th century under the guidelines of the architect Ventura Rodríguez, who constructed a impressive funeral chapel. In the sanctuary garden, a rose bush without thorns grows, which according to the legend is the miracle of San Pedro de Alcántara. Interesting collections of liturgical metalwork are also exhibited in the Royal Chapel Museum.
