Alcanar (Tarragona, Catalonia)

Alcanar

A fishing village with exquisite gastronomy

Tarragona

Alcanar is located about 40 kilometres from the Delta del Ebro Natural Park.

Its origins go back to the Iberian settlement of Moleta del Remei (7th-2nd centuries BC), although it was later occupied by the Romans and, later still, by the Islamic civilization, when multiple agricultural techniques and irrigation were introduced, and are still used today. In the Middle Ages, it was incorporated into the Crown of Aragon, and centuries later, the walls surrounded the town (the Torre del Carrer Nou still remains). Defence towers were built on the coast, such as Sant Pere.

One of its great attractions is the sea and the coast. Its 12 kilometres of beaches and coves, calm and clean, are one of its jewels. Water sports, hiking and excursions through its protected natural areas are some of the many options for tourists. Next to Alcanar is Las Casas, a small fishing village, which stands out for its traditional seafood cuisine (prawns, rice dishes and fish soups, for example).
