Alcalá de la Selva

Alcalá de la Selva is situated in the Sierra de Gúdar mountains. The river Alcalá flows at its feet and feeds a profusion of small vegetable gardens.

Nowadays, Alcalá de la Selva is the main winter resort in the province of Teruel. It is mainly known for its scenery, which inspires many hikers to walk among it, above all from Aragón and the Valencia region. The town, whose streets have a Moorish air, has an excellent collection of religious art in the church of San Simón y San Judas, from the late 16th century. This old and historic town's list of heritage sites is rounded off by the sanctary of La Virgen de la Vega and the hermitage of Loreto. The mountainous surrounding area is rich in springs. Three kilometres from town is the sanctuary of the La Virgen de la Vega, an 18th century buildingwhich contains her revered Romanesque image. An ancient ceremony is its festival of Moors and Christians, held every 8 September and which represents the old quarrels between the two peoples.
