The Miguel de Cervantes Prize is the highest award of Hispanic literature. It is given to a writer in honour of their literary work every 23 April, the anniversary of the death of the author of Don Quixote of La Mancha.
Created in 1974, this prize was effectively awarded at the 1976 edition. The candidates are presented by the plenary session of the Spanish Royal Academy, by the Academies of the Spanish-speaking countries, and by the winners in previous years. The jury is chaired by the Spanish Minister of Culture and, since 1980, it can only be given to one of the candidates. The award ceremony takes place in the auditorium of the University of Alcalá de Henares, in the province of Madrid.
