Human chess

Festivity of National Tourist Interest
Alicante-Alacant

The children of Xàbia-Jávea stage a play on a giant chessboard.

The city of Xàbia-Jávea, Alicante, celebrates a very unique theatrical performance in summer: Human chess. This unique initiative involves boys and girls from local schools, aged between 6 and 14, who bring various characters to life. Based on a chess game, each year a different story is told with a plot, scenery and musical accompaniment. It is not necessary to know the rules of this game to enjoy and understand this theatrical recreation.

A narrator and two players (a schoolchild and a guest of honour, usually someone who is linked to the city in some way) read the moves of a notable game in the history of chess. On the board, the young actors, like pieces, move and shape this play.
