La Passió

Esparreguera

Barcelona

Since the 16th century, the Gran Teatro de La Passió has been performed at Esparreguera, harking back to the old medieval “auto sacramental”.

As a testament to the ancient “auto sacramental” as well as the “mysteries” and “miracles” of medieval European theatre, the performances of La Passió have been taking place in this town since the 16th century, staged and performed by local amateurs, with roles sometimes passed down from parents to children. These performances take place at the Gran Teatro de “La Passió”. They are divided into two parts and 48 scenes: the first part covers the public life of Jesus and the Passion, while the second part covers his Death and Resurrection, represented in the morning and in the afternoon. In 2025, in addition to the traditional format, there will also be two-and-a-half-hour performances of La Passió.
