Jarramplas

A popular festivity that represents the punishment of a cattle rustler who the people try to expel from the town

“Jarramplas” is a character wearing a jacket, from which lots of multicoloured ribbons hang, and a conical mask with two horns and a giant nose. He traditionally runs around the streets of Piornal playing a little drum. The character takes part in the procession as a punishment as he represents a cattle rustler. In olden days, the inhabitants of Piornal, to the north of Cáceres and right in the Valle del Jerte, threw all kinds of vegetables and fruits in front of “Jarramplas” as he passed by. Nowadays, attendees throw turnips provided by the town council and residents. Ironclad armour has been added to the traditional outfit to help protect the character from the blows.
