It is one of the most popular gastronomic markets in the Basque Country and takes place in the historic centre of Gernika – Lumo every last Monday of October.
The stars are the “baserritarras” (farmers) and their products, displayed on some 900 stalls placed along central streets such as San Juan Ibarra, Paseleku, Artekale and Juan Calzada. The crowd-pleasers include contests in various categories such as vegetables, fruits, flowers, cheeses, txakoli and honey. The jury classifies the produce first thing in the morning and, from then on, exhibitors can sell their products. The awards ceremony takes place at noon in front of the Mercury fountain. Next to the market, you can also enjoy parades and performances by bertsolaris (a Basque figure similar to the troubadour). Although the market ends around 2:00 p.m., the festive atmosphere continues into the afternoon.
