“Fiestas Juradas” of San Miguel Arcángel
Commemoration - Festivity of National Tourist InterestEvery October the small town on Tuineje in Fuerteventura holds its fiestas de San Miguel to commemorate the battle of Tamasite in 1740, when the locals expelled British pirates from the island of Fuerteventura.
The reenactments of the British disembarking on Gran Tarajal beach and the battle on Mount Tamasite, and the pilgrimage procession in honour of the saint, are the three most important moments in the Fiestas Juradas (sworn festival) of San Miguel Arcángel de Tuineje. The events it recalls took place in 1740, when English pirates invaded the island but were eventually repulsed by the Majoreros (the local people of Fuerteventura).
