Festivities in honour of Saint James the Apostle
Festivity of International Tourist Interest
A Coruña
The festivities in honour of the patron saint of Spain and Galicia reach their peak during the so-called 'Fireworks of the Apostle', the Offering to the Saint and the moving ceremony in which the botafumeiro (incense burner) of the Cathedral is swung.
The appearance of the remains of James the Apostle led to the creation of the Galician capital, according to legend. Santiago de Compostela soon became a holy city along with Jerusalem and Rome, and a pilgrimage destination, resulting in the Camino de Santiago (World Heritage).
