Pontevedra Maios Fiesta

The Maios Fiesta celebrates the arrival of good weather in Galicia.

The celebration is of Celtic origin and is related to the appearance of the first spring flowers. It is a traditional fiesta throughout Galicia and especially so in the cities of Pontevedra and Ourense. Since 1970, Plaza de la Ferrería Square in Pontevedra has been the festive setting for a competition to elect the best maios – figures created out of branches and flowers. Alongside each of these figures a child sings a song while the rest of the group keep time.
