Every year Mérida relives its Roman past, with gladiator fights, legionaries marching, Roman markets, historic recreations, and many other things.
For a few days the city travels back to the 1st century AD and recreates Roman life on the streets and in the monuments. Performances take place in the Roman theatre and amphitheatre, fashion shows are held to display clothing from that period, a Roman market is organised, and gladiators return to the city. A "White" Roman Night also takes place, in which the main monuments are open to visitors until the early hours of the morning.
