On 29 June, San Pedro’s Day, the town of Haro in La Rioja holds an interesting festival: The Battle of Wine.
The origin of this tradition dates back to a possible dispute with the nearby town of Miranda de Ebro over the ownership of a rural area in the municipality, Riscos de Bilibio, where the festive battle takes place. After a mass, this peaceful battle starts with both sides throwing litres of wine at each other non-stop. It’s an impressive spectacle that ends at midday. Then, the people return to Haro and gather in Plaza de la Paz square.
