Baptism of the Child Jesus in Palencia

Also known as “El Bautizo” (The Baptism), it is one of the most widely acknowledged festivities in the province of Palencia.
It is performed in honour of the Cofradía del Dulce Nombre del Niño Jesús (Brotherhood of the Sweet Name of the Child Jesus), which was founded in the 16th century in the area surrounding what was formerly the Jewish quarter of the city. The traditional “Pedrea de confites al paso de la talla del niño” (throwing of sweets as the procession goes by) where the image of the Child Jesus is carried along on a platform to the singing of the popular carol known as “EA” around the Roman Church of San Miguel. The nocturnal rendering of Palencia's anthem by the town band at the foot of the Tower of San Miguel is another well-known event.
