Ai Weiwei (Beijing, China, 1957) is an artist whose vision of art and politics is marked by the harassment that he and his family suffered from his country's authorities. His time in New York helped him shape his peculiar style through Western contemporary art.
A teacher and prominent figure of contemporary Chinese art, he has worked in different areas, such as sculpture, film, photography, ceramics, painting, writing and social media, always focusing on geopolitical and sociopolitical issues.Ai Weiwei's exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León (MUSAC) focuses on his use of plastic blocks, especially in his LEGO paintings, and presents a contemporary version of the famous painting “The 3rd of May 1808 in Madrid” (or “The Executions”) by Goya, in which the author portrays himself among those executed.
